Case Study

Production of Off-Season Crops

Introduction:

District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, launched the YSR CHEYUTHA-AASARA-Shade Net project to boost the incomes of women SHGs through agricultural technical interventions.

Problems:

Prior to the project’s implementation, there was an issue with growing off-season vegetables to fetch higher prices under adverse weather. Proper pest management and excellent farming techniques were required. Poor SHG families were compelled to take loans to meet their daily requirements. There was a lack of funding for infrastructure and appropriate marketing of the product

Solutions:

Shade net buildings were installed to provide a regulated ambiance and environment by lowering the light intensity and effective heat. Training in integrated pest management and excellent farming practices was given. It comprised government financing and subsidy assistance for installation and market connection in a cluster base.

Outcomes:

This initiative provided financial help to 2000 SHG women and enabled a protected cultivation structure to produce off-season crops. There was an increase in income from growing vegetables and flowers, resulting in a consistent income of Rs10,000 to 12,000. It offered jobs through small/medium-sized business units. Shade nets aided the creation of a conducive microenvironment for vermicompost production.

Challenges:

The obstacles were ensuring that YSR Cheyutha and Aasara beneficiaries were eligible for this scheme, and maintaining the accuracy of the database, and biometric authentication. Educating beneficiaries about the advantages of shade net activities was a concern.

Innovation:

YSR Cheyutha and Aasara benefits were extended to all eligible women in society. For large corporate clients, there was the procurement of tie-ups with local markets and usage of plastic nets composed of 100% Polyethylene thread with specific UV treatment. The planned region for the Shade Net House building was suited for high-value vegetable growing.

Opportunities:

This initiative is intended to last four years, with extensions possible if the state government decides.

Summary:

A full ecosystem is established to help farmers by providing them with low-cost net homes, agri-inputs, knowledge training, on-site monitoring and agronomy support, and market linkages.
