Green Clean Campaign
Problem
- Wastewater logging and management in schools.
- Unusable toilets, filled-up single pits, toilets without shed.
- Lack of ownership of students and community in school infrastructure, energy wastage.
- Aesthetics – Lack of green cover, the lifeless environment in schools.
- Children were made the front runners of the ODF+ awareness campaign spreading messages in their own villages.
Solution
- Twin-pitting of toilets with Y junction provided in schools and retrofitting, i.e., repair, water supply, etc.
- Nurturing committees included representation from students, parents, teachers, and progressive people of the society.
- Swahchata Anurodh was inaugurated on 12th January – Youth Day, where the students rallied in their village spreading the message of ODF+.
- CSR was roped in to provide solar panels to the schools.
- The horticulture department provided seeds of fruits and vegetables for the nutritional garden.
Outcomes
- Increased usage of school toilets by students, increased awareness about twin-pits, and conversion of excreta into manure.
- No more waterlogging. Wastewater is feeding the nutritional garden.
- The barren areas of the schools were made into nutritional gardens with the help of inputs from the horticulture department.
- Parents and villagers, through the Swachchata Anurodh campaign, got to know about the initiatives and pledged with the students to achieve ODF+ targets.
- Children were made the front runners of the ODF+ awareness campaign spreading messages in their own villages.

Case Study
“You can come any day of the week to the school and we shall have enough food to feed you”,
said the headmaster of Laka Primary School, one of the schools selected under the Green Clean
Campaign. The initiatives taken under the campaign by the school are –
- Construction of Handwashing station
- Construction of Soakpits
- Retrofitting of Girls’ Toilet Block
- Twin-pitting of Toilets
- Kitchen garden- flowers and vegetables
- Rooftop Garden
- Vermicompost pit
- Azolla Pit
- 3 step filtration process – net, sand and activated charcoal
- Water reservoir with water lilies and fishes.
- Waste segregation
- Mini Botanical garden
The kids are actively engaged in the management of kitchen garden, vermicompost pits and
rooftop garden as well. Exquisite horticultural produce like Strawberries and Dragon Fruit is being
cultivated within the school compound. Along with this the school has also made arrangements
for revival of traditional Indian outdoor games like hopscotch. Through the Green Clean Campaign
the school engages the students in comprehensive education, wherein they are learning the
concepts of waste management, water recycling and gardening. The lush green kitchen garden,
beautiful water reservoir and clean school campus are a sight to behold in the rural schools of
Bengal. As a result, students have developed such a bond with the school that they visit the
campus even on holidays.
