Shimla Waste Management and Energy Recovery Initiative
Problems
- Illegal dumping leads to significant pollution, adversely affecting air and water quality in the region.
- The presence of garbage creates unpleasant odors and attracts pests, leading to unhygienic conditions.
- Accumulated waste can become a breeding ground for disease-carrying organisms, increasing the risk of epidemics.
- The hilly terrain of Shimla complicates waste collection efforts, making it difficult to manage and dispose of garbage effectively.
Solutions
- Continuous information, education, and communication (IEC) efforts engage the public and stakeholders in waste segregation at the source.
- Establishing a WhatsApp contact for complaints, regular meetings with sanitary workers, and deploying Swachhta Vahans.
- Implementation of a Waste to Energy (W2E) Plant scientifically processes municipal solid waste (MSW) into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and syngas
- The door-to-door garbage collection scheme enforces waste segregation at the source and provides jobs for garbage collectors.
