Waste to Best – Reuse of Holy Navratri Garbi Pots

Thousands of sacred Navratri Garbi Pots were discarded annually at dumping grounds, creating avoidable waste and increasing the burden on landfills.
Disposing of religiously significant Garbi Pots as garbage raised concerns regarding cultural sensitivity and the respectful handling of sacred materials.
Reusable clay pots with substantial utility value were being wasted instead of being repurposed for plantation, urban greening, and beautification.
Public awareness and participation were limited regarding circular economy practices, resource recovery, and the practical application of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle principles.
There was a need for an innovative, low-cost, and replicable model for religious waste management that other urban local bodies could adopt.

Approximately 25,000 Holy Garbi Pots were reused between 2021 and 2025, successfully converting religious waste into valuable community assets.
Around 5,000 pots were diverted annually, achieving a landfill diversion rate of over 83% for the collected reusable pots.
Urban greening was supported by deploying thousands of these reused pots in gardens, schools, offices, and various public spaces.
The project has been implemented successfully for 5 consecutive years (2021–2025) with sustained citizen participation and community support.
The initiative gained national visibility through MoHreceived UA and recMoH, received senior state officials, strengthening potential across urban India.
