Blood Bag Traceability – Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council

Blood Bag Traceability
Problem
- Blood availability must be ensured across both urban and rural geographies through a system of Blood Collection Centres and Blood Storage Centres.
- The hub-and-spoke system involves transporting blood while maintaining WHO-recommended temperatures, ensuring blood safety.
- Safe blood transfusion is critical in managing maternal haemorrhage, anaemia, emergency cases, redice maternal morbidity and mortality.
- Quality management of blood bags by ensuring they are stored and transported at the right temperature is vital for safe blood transfusion.
- Digitized inventory management and end-to-end traceability are needed to track real-time availability.
Solution
- 41 Blood Collection Centres and 57 Blood Storage Centres across Kerala must be connected in Hub-and-Spoke model.
- Software application to enable blood bag traceability to be installed at the State Data Centre.
- Required IoT sensors have to be manufactured, calibrated and tested before implementation.
- All technicians, counsellors and medical officers in all these 98 Centres have to be trained on how to use both software.
- Portal for citizens to view Blood availability and shortage across all Blood Centres will be released.
Outcomes
- Reduction in wastage of blood and discard percentage.
- Digitization of inventory management and record management system reduces workload of health care staff.
- Temperature readings at both Blood Collection Centre and Blood Storage centre were reported accurately.
- Real-time information on blood availability helps patients in need of blood to book blood in advance.
- Timely notification of temperature breaches to concerned officials, resulting in immediate rectification and reducing wastage.
