Problem

  • Lack of waste dump management in the district
  • The rainwater gets diverted to sumps resulting in good water flow.
  • Prevalence of fly rock during blasting.
  • Lack of waste dump stability.
  • Need for slope stability.

Solution

  • Implementation of Corie mat system to avoid the soil erosion
  • Implementation of garland drain and retaining wall to drain and retain surface or subsoil water
  • Use of a non-electric delay detonator for controlled blasting.
  • Terraced the dump by implementing a 10-meter height and slope angle of 40 degrees.
  • Sought technical advice from NITK Surathkal for measuring slope failure

Outcomes

  • The dump has been totally stabilized
  • The skill of local employment has been improved in HEMM operation.
  • Controlled blasting ensures no fly rocks and ground vibration
  • The cost per metric tonne of production quantity has come down.
  • There are no dump failures or collapsing of benches.
