Opencast Mining
Problem
- Lack of waste dump management in the district
- The rainwater gets diverted to sumps resulting in good water flow.
- Prevalence of fly rock during blasting.
- Lack of waste dump stability.
- Need for slope stability.
Solution
- Implementation of Corie mat system to avoid the soil erosion
- Implementation of garland drain and retaining wall to drain and retain surface or subsoil water
- Use of a non-electric delay detonator for controlled blasting.
- Terraced the dump by implementing a 10-meter height and slope angle of 40 degrees.
- Sought technical advice from NITK Surathkal for measuring slope failure
Outcomes
- The dump has been totally stabilized
- The skill of local employment has been improved in HEMM operation.
- Controlled blasting ensures no fly rocks and ground vibration
- The cost per metric tonne of production quantity has come down.
- There are no dump failures or collapsing of benches.
