Case Study

Irrigation Through Groundwater Recharge.

Introduction:

Mahabubnagar district is one of the drought-prone districts in the state of Telangana. The initiative to construct check dams was undertaken by the Irrigation and CAD Department, for water conservation and irrigation through recharge of groundwater.

Problem:

The availability of irrigated areas is less compared to the cultivable areas. The people of the district migrated to other districts and states due to drought conditions.

Solution:

Construction of check dams across major streams (Vagus) that are designed in a way to avoid the formation of flood banks and erosion of banks.

Outcomes:

The construction of check dams across the local streams increased the groundwater table and irrigated area. Also, sustainability is observed in bore wells. There is no drinking water scarcity which resulted in reverse migration.

Challenges:

There have been protests from the farmers along banks of streams.

Innovation:

The entire stream is rejuvenated by constructing a series of check dams across the major streams.

Opportunities:

The project can be implemented in a similar manner in other states of the country for assured cultivation throughout the year.

Summary:

The project increased the crop yield of the population under Midjil, Hanwada, Devarkadra, Chinna Chinta Kunta, Addakal, Musapet, and Koilkonda blocks of Mahabubnagar district.
