Case Study

Increasing the Growth of Tourism

Introduction:

To guarantee a secure and organized approach to tourism development via the Registration of Tourism Operators, the Department of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu, released guidelines for controlling the activities of tourism services. The critical goals of the guidelines were to ensure that services were provided in a high-quality manner following appropriate safety and hygiene procedures.

Problem:

There were problems with unregulated tourism service providers that hampered the quality of services provided to domestic and international tourists before the project’s implementation. Clarity on the scope, terminology, and eligibility of tourist providers was lacking.  There was a requirement for the prohibition of unlicensed activities and to resolve the safety issues due to unmonitored conduct.

Solution:

It involved launching guidelines to streamline the operations of adventure tourism operators and camping operators. Registration for tourism providers was made mandatory to ensure a safe environment for tourist participation. A typical online registration portal was provided for an effective and stakeholder-friendly process. The third-party inspection was done with expertise to ensure quality and quicker processing time.

Outcomes:

The outcomes included standardized operation of adventure tour operators, camping operators, caravan tour operators, etc. The establishment of homestays in the state and the creation of quality infrastructure to facilitate the services. It also involved creating a safe and secure environment for tourist participation.

Challenges:

The challenges included the provision of substandard services and the lack of required amenities, safety regulations and certified operators. Illegal operation without obtaining any permissions was also an obstacle.

Innovation:

The innovative aspect of the project was the development of a user-friendly online portal for tourism.

Opportunities:
