  • All slum dwellers having NCD tracked and treated at UPHCs, and regular follow-ups are done digital database of patient investigation reports and treatment provided stored.

Case Study

PROJECT AROGYAM

Introduction

In the increasing environment, Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are attributing more mortality across the globe. NCDs are also known as chronic diseases that exist for a long duration, and prevention of risk factors, lifestyle modification, early detection, regular treatment & follow-up can lead to a healthy life and less fatality in the cases.

Problems

COVID-19 played a major role in fatality of the non-communicable disease-affected cases, especially in slums. No proper health records of the slum dwellers were maintained.

Solutions

Mapping of all slum households, slum-like settlements, areas, and wards for intervention was done. House-to-house health screening cum advanced testing using digital diagnostic devices with mobile applications by paramedics was also carried on.

Outcomes

Ward-wise, UPHC-wise, city level NCD data created disease patterns, and its prevalence was identified. Also, new data on Anaemia and obesity prevalence were identified. In Berhampur Municipal Corporation, 41340 Population have been covered through Arogyam. 16318 Male, 25022 Female. Among the Major Findings of the Programme, 39 % Population is Obsess, 38% are Anemic, 13% are Hypertensive, and 5% are Diabetic till 10th April 2023.

Challenges

Non-acceptance of slum dwellers as NCD can affect them because they are working hard. Resistance to believing they have Anaemia as most of them eat heavy meals posed as a challenge too.

Innovation

Advanced testing using Digital Diagnostic Device with Mobile Application was done. Patient Unique ID was created to track his/her health status by UPHC, City. GIS mapping was done to identify the area where a common disease burden is prevalent.

Opportunities

Academic studies may be published on findings for studies in Medical Colleges. Also, Electrocardiogram Testing may be used in sub-centers for chronic patients in the area.

Summary

Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) implemented an innovation as “AROGYAM” House-to-House Health Screening cum Advanced Testing using Digital Diagnostic Device with a mobile application. Through this Programme, the Slums and Wards were identified where the intervention could be undertaken. BeMC has identified 168 Slums, 17869 slum households, and 105000 slum population.
