Poultry Development in Meghalaya in Improving the Livelihood of Farmers through Training and Capacity Building
Problem
- Reducing mortality in poultry through scientific poultry farming.
- Reducing imports of eggs and meat from outside the State by improving farmers’ livelihoods.
- Many farmers in the State still follow traditional methods, which are less productive.
- The need for farmers to adopt new technology in line with Standard Operating Procedures through farm training.
- Biosecurity measures in the farm need to be made known to every farmer.
Solution
- Government policy defined separately for officers and technical committees set up for the purpose.
- Implementation through schemes sanctioned by the Government.
- Sanctions primarily cover materials and supplies, including wages for labourers.
- Indenting for the supply of chicks, feed, medicines, and other essentials once a scheme is sanctioned.
- Deployment of separate staff across all units, from the chick stage to the adult stage.
Outcomes
- Increased egg production in the State, with many farmers scaling up from 50 birds to 500 birds.
- Drastic reduction in dependency on Government subsidy schemes.
- Establishment of egg production centres guided by the farm to supply local consumers.
- Setting up of hatcheries by young entrepreneurs within Ri Bhoi District.
- Reduced antibiotic use in chicks, making poultry farmers more confident to expand their business.
