“Challenges in Water-Scarce Regions: A Multifaceted Perspective”
Problems
- Reduced sustainability of water sources.
- Limited water availability during summers in rainshadow areas and hilly regions.
- Lack of employment prospects for a significant portion of the workforce.
- Forced migration is driven by the combined effects of water scarcity and lack of jobs.
- Lack of community involvement in managing and conserving water resources.
Solutions
- Empower local communities for water management through Gram Panchayats and community-driven initiatives.
- Construct check dams for reliable and technically sound water storage.
- Link MGNREGA to create employment and support community-owned water management projects.
- Address drawbacks of traditional structures like Vanrai Bandhara and Nalla Bunds.
- Advocate for supportive policies and enhance multi-agency coordination for effective implementation.
Outcomes
- Built 163 Concrete Weir check-dams in 123 villages within 7 months.
- Created/rejuvenated 4,635 cubic litres of additional water storage capacity.
- Provided jobs to 11,501 unskilled and semi-skilled labourers, generating 68,996 man-days of work.
- Significantly raised groundwater table through successful aquifer recharge.
- Surged demand for water conservation and harvesting projects under MGNREGA, reflecting community awareness.
