Kiosks and SUP Free Brigades – Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board

Kiosks and SUP-Free Brigades
Problem
- Continued use of Single-Use Plastics (SUP) despite the state-wide ban due to a lack of sustained awareness and accessibility to alternatives.
- Plastic litter on beaches, markets, and eco-sensitive zones endangers biodiversity, impacts tourism, and strains local administration.
- Low compliance in hill towns and urban hotspots due to fragmented outreach and inconsistent enforcement.
- Limited public knowledge on permitted and banned items and the absence of consistent public engagement formats.
- There is a need for innovative community-facing interventions that ensure long-term behavioural change.
Solution
- Established solar-powered Manjappai Kiosks at high-footfall zones (e.g., Besant Nagar and Neelankarai beaches) as static information hubs.
- Deployed mobile awareness brigades—Manjappai (urban), Blue (coastal), and Green (eco-sensitive hill zones)—to conduct roadshows and outreach.
- Collaborated with CSR partners and educational institutions to scale weekly engagements and campaigns.
- Distributed cloth bags, hosted cultural events, and held quizzes, games, and live Q&A sessions to sustain citizen interest.
- Enabled digital tracking of activities and reinforced awareness with support from the National Green Corps and local authorities.
Outcomes
- Over 6.91 lakh people reached across 493 roadshows and 46 kiosk events during the 2024–25 evaluation period.
- More than 3,000 Manjappai cloth bags distributed and 1.37 lakh IEC materials disseminated.
- Significant improvement in plastic ban compliance in urban, coastal, and hill regions.
- Over 548,000 km covered in outreach activity by customized e-bikes, vans, and foot teams.
- Model recognized for its dual strategy—static and mobile—and potential for adaptation to climate action and circular economy campaigns.
