Shala Swasthya Parikshan – School Education Department, Rajasthan

Shala Swasthya Parikshan

Problem

  • There was no statewide system to track student health in real-time, leading to undiagnosed conditions and delayed medical interventions.
  • Children, particularly in remote and socio-economically disadvantaged areas, faced challenges in accessing timely medical care due to healthcare gaps.
  • Previous school health screening programs were region-specific, lacked uniformity, and did not have structured follow-up mechanisms.
  • Teachers interact with students daily but were not formally involved in identifying early signs of health issues, delaying necessary referrals and interventions.
  • A lack of a digital, paperless system meant that large-scale health screenings were inefficient, prone to errors, and difficult to analyze for policy-driven decisions.

Solution

  • A digital health screening initiative was introduced to track student health in real-time, allowing for structured data collection and timely medical interventions.
  • A statewide digital rollout was conducted in August 2024, with 4.5 lakh teachers screening 75 lakh students in just 20 days using an app-based platform.
  • Identified health conditions were categorized into school-level interventions, medical referrals, and surgical cases, ensuring targeted action for each child.
  • Medical interventions were facilitated through Ayushman Bharat, Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), and Palanhaar Scheme, ensuring free treatment for eligible students.
  • A monitoring system was integrated into Shala Darpan, enabling real-time tracking of health interventions, annual screenings, and continuous follow-ups.

Outcomes

  • Extensive health screening covered 75 lakh students, identifying 70 health conditions and capturing 50 crore data points on nutrition, physical health, and emotional well-being.
  • 90,000 students were identified for urgent surgical interventions, while 20 lakh students required referrals for conditions like anemia, malnutrition, and epilepsy.
  • 21 lakh students were flagged for hygiene-related issues (such as daily brushing and bathing), which were addressed through school-led awareness programs.
  • Eligible students were successfully linked with government health schemes like Ayushman Bharat and RBSK, ensuring free medical treatment and financial support.
  • A digital health monitoring system was integrated into Shala Darpan, enabling real-time tracking and making student health surveillance an ongoing process.
