Project Kalpatru – NMDC Limited

Introduction:

NMDC is the first CPSE in India to implement Enterprise Resource Planning on the SAP S/4 HANA platform. This project was undertaken to address NMDC’s core business requirements through a strong ERP backbone.

Problem:

NMDC required standardization of business processes as it lacked functional integration across business processes and the unavailability of data-based analytics caused the delay in decision making.

Solution:

The project Kalpatru addressed NMDC’s core business requirements through a strong ERP backbone which provided a fully integrated solution encompassing all the business functions of the organization.

Outcomes:

ERP initiative has ushered in process transformation by the adoption of the industry best practices, resulting in improved efficiency and greater transparency at NMDC. It has changed the way NMDC runs its business and has helped in the cross-functional integration of enterprise-wide functions across NMDC.

Challenges:

The critical challenge was to keep up the motivation of employees and ensure commitment during this implementation. Another historic challenge was posed by the pandemic that impeded on-site mobilization of resources for solution testing and ERP Go-Live.

Innovation:

The organization used digital methods like Microsoft Teams and Webex during the pandemic for conducting System Integration Testing (SIT) and User Acceptance Testing (UAT).

Opportunities:

NMDC has planned to implement the ERP for upcoming coal mines and other new projects along with five new domains that will be rolled out shortly.

Summary:

The project Kalpatru has provided competitive advantages to NMDC by embracing technologies and integrating solutions with IoT, Data Analytics, and AI. It will act as a lighthouse project for the mining sector ushering into an era of automation and digitalization-driven growth.
