Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakarana (DAMaN)
Problem
- Presence of hard-to-reach malaria-endemic regions (Malaria morbidity and mortality is high in hilly/forested areas).
- Heterogeneous malaria paradigm and complex vector bionomics.
- High burden of falciparum malaria (falciparum malaria is known to cause complications and death).
- The problem of asymptomatic malaria is very common in remote and inaccessible areas.
- Inadequate penetration of health services.
Solution
- DAMaN camps are planned to be conducted two times a year, i.e., April-May (prior to the endemic season) and Sept-Oct.
- Along with malaria diagnosis and treatment, measurement of growth parameters like weight, height, MUAC, and Haemoglobin test of children under five are being carried out.
- Blood pressure checkups and hemoglobin tests are being conducted for all pregnant women and lactating mothers.
- All identified anemic children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers are being given iron supplementation at the campsite.
- IRS and LLIN/ITN interventions are being done along with the health camps in inaccessible villages & hamlets.
Outcomes
- Improved access to the Malaria Control Programme along with screening of nutritional parameters.
- Identification of the population having asymptomatic (febrile) malaria in those pockets.
- Reduction of gametocyte load in the target population of both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.
- It has been observed that DAMaN has brought a significant impact on the drastic reduction of malaria cases (72%).
- Addressed the issue of asymptomatic (afebrile) malaria.
