Effective Patrolling of Transmission LinesĀ

Problem

  • Reducing the time required for EHV Line Patrolling
  • Reaching the towers at remote places for observation of any defect
  • The increasing availability of power in case of any breakdown
  • Manual inspection of hundreds of kilometers required time and manpower
  • Identification of defects with the naked eye and dealing with manpower scarcity

Solution

  • Provision of 24 drones to all the trancos, O&M Circles across the state of Maharashtra
  • Obtaining necessary permissions from the authorities for flying drones
  • Provision of extensive training for flying
  • Development of in-house pilots for flying the drones
  • Usage of special software to identify and analyze the defects during patrolling

Outcomes

  • Usage of drones with pre-installed thermo vision and visual cameras for patrolling
  • Monitoring the hotspots by capturing thermal and visual images of any defects
  • Digitally recording data along with monitoring and analysis by experts
  • Digitally recorded data contained all the relevant details
  • Monitoring transmission lines and towers through drones to avoid unwarranted breakdowns

Case Study

Effective Patrolling of Transmission Lines

Introduction:

The Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) used drones for EHV line patrolling, which involved operating remote-controlled drones and employing the Remote Airborne Inspection & Scanning System (RAISS) to monitor transmission lines.

Problems

Before the project’s implementation, there was a need to reduce the time required for EHV Line Patrolling and reaching towers in remote locations to monitor problems. Manual inspection of hundreds of kilometers in the event of a breakdown was also a problem.

Solutions

This initiative entailed the distribution of 24 drones to trancos and O&M Circles. The approvals from the authorities were secured, and training was provided, along with the development of in-house pilots. During patrolling, special software was used to analyze defects.

Outcomes

Drones equipped with thermovision and visual cameras were employed for patrolling and monitoring hotspots. Data were digitally recorded, monitored, and analyzed by experts.

Challenges:

The challenges included adopting new technology and obtaining permission from the authority to fly drones.

Innovation:

The innovative aspects included replacing conventional ways of EHV line patrolling with the use of drones, deployment of RAISS, and usage of thermovision cameras and visual cameras.

Opportunities:

The project’s plans include supplying drones to each line maintenance subdivision and replicating it in other states.

Summary:

Monitoring transmission lines and towers using drones has assisted MSETCL in avoiding unwarranted breakdowns and tripping due to minor transmission line faults in recent years.
