Mobile Lift Irrigation Scheme – Irrigation Department, Government of Assam

Mobile Lift Irrigation Scheme

Problem

  • Lack of fixed irrigation infrastructure in remote and flood-prone regions of Assam.
  • Inaccessibility of electricity supply in rural farmlands.
  • High dependency on costly diesel-powered pumps for irrigation.
  • Inefficiency in water distribution across fields with irregular topography.
  • Limited options for smallholder farmers to access sustainable irrigation systems.

Solution

  • Introduced a solar-powered mobile lift irrigation system that floats on water and can be relocated.
  • Deployed self-priming BLDC pumps with recycled UPVC barrel-based floatation platforms.
  • Enabled IoT-based remote monitoring systems for real-time data.
  • Designed for quick assembly and operation by trained beneficiaries.
  • Customisable and modular in design, scalable to varying capacity needs and water body sizes.

Outcomes

  • More than 100 schemes installed in FY 2024–25, covering over 800 hectares.
  • Reduced irrigation costs for farmers by eliminating diesel dependency (~₹7000–9000 per bigha saved annually).
  • Provided an emergency solar power backup source during floods for relief camps.
  • Enhanced irrigation reach by allowing multiple suction points from a single mobile unit.
  • Supported over 1000 external and 800 internal beneficiaries across the state.
