Nomination

  • Need for early maturing finger millet and little millet varieties suitable for rice transplanting.
  • Lack of high grain and fodder yielding pest and disease-resistant varieties of small millets.
  • Problems faced in collecting, evaluating, and utilizing local indigenous and exotic germplasm of small millets in the breeding programme.
  • To develop improved production technology, including a cropping system, and ensure nutritional quality management in newly released varieties

Achievements

  • Released Gujarat Nagli-8, an early maturing > 100 days variety in Finger millet allowing transplanting.
  • Improved practices for millets like nursery raising, green manuring, planting time, manure and fertilizer management
  • Evolved water management, weed management, cropping pattern, and bio-fertilizer application techniques 
  • Developed techniques involving the management of disease and insect pests prevailing in tribal and hilly regions.
