State Support to Ph.D. Scholars

Problem

• Need for study and research in core and allied disciples. 
• Lack of support is a barrier for research scholars in outreaching academic and career goals.
• Absence of financial stability.
• Absence of effective platform to facilitate research supportive environment.
• Lack of infrastructure hampered the fulfillment of the need for quality professors.

Solution

• The state government started “Scheme Of Developing High-quality research (SHODH)
• Provision of financial support to regular research scholars doing Ph.D. to carry out qualitative research in various fields.
• Fostered high-quality research that supports the development of the State’s research capacity.
• Facilitated access to all scholars without any barrier of age, gender, subject and income.
• Updated government resolution with proper data maintenance & management.

Challenges

• Drafting & updation of government resolutions and modules on the portal.
• Data maintenance under various categories and redressal of student queries.
• Constitution of committees and establishing coordination between them.
• Preparation of SOP and file processing for approval.
• Nomination of nodal officers was also a challenge

Innovation

• Empowered academic and career goals by removing the financial barrier.
• Providing access to all scholars without any barrier of age, gender, subject and income.
• Provision for contingency expenses to meet other requirements.
• Facilitation of equipment, books, transportation, conference fees besides financial aid.
• Generation of employment opportunities outside the state to improve quality of life.

Outcomes

• Students studying/researching for Ph.D. can do quality research work with financial support.
• The scheme has resulted in an increase in the number of students pursuing Ph.D.
• Fulfilled the need for quality professors in the future government, grant-in-aid and private educational institutions.
• The scheme would provide access and equity in remote areas also.
• The overall support would create a research community throughout the country.

State Support to Ph.D. Scholars

Introduction

The state of Gujarat is at the forefront of implementing the scholarship scheme for Research Scholars with no condition as to gender, faculty (Stream/Subject) and age, or income. Therefore, in order to facilitate and encourage young research scholars for qualitative research activities, Department of Education, Government of Gujarat has started “ScHeme Of Developing High quality research (SHODH)”

Problems

The lack of support regarding finances, and effective platforms was proving a barrier for research scholars in outreaching academic and career goals. There was a need for a conducive environment to facilitate and promote qualitative research in emerging areas. The core and other allied disciplines which need to be studied and researched were disorganised due to lack of support to scholars.

Solutions

The state government started “ScHeme Of Developing High-quality research (SHODH) to facilitate financial support to regular research scholars doing Ph.D. in Universities of Gujarat to carry out qualitative research in various fields.

Outcomes

Now, the students studying/researching in Ph.D. can do quality research work with financial support. As a result, there was an increase in the number of students pursuing Ph.D. This scheme provides financial aid to 1000 students each year. The encumbered research by students fosters critical thinking and analytical skills through hands-on learning.

Challenges

The challenges were to draft & update government resolutions and modules on the portal from time to time. There was a need for data maintenance under various categories and redressal of student queries. The fund Allocation, nomination of nodal officers, preparation of SOP, file processing for approval, classification of subjects, constitution of various committees, establishing coordination, defining criteria were some other challenges.

Innovation

Besides the stipend, the project provides for contingency expenses to meet other requirements (equipment, books, transportation, conference fees)

Opportunities

The department plans on implementing provisions as per NEP-2020. The increasing number of students will also benefit the university in ranking competitions like NAAC and GSIRF. The Ph.D. students will also get employment opportunities outside the state and the state will develop the potential to transform itself into a research hub. It would provide access and equity in remote areas. The scheme fulfilled the need for quality professors in the future government, grant-in-aid and private educational institutions.

Summary

Department of Education, Government of Gujarat strives to facilitate and promote qualitative research in emerging areas. The core and other allied disciplines are required to be studied and researched in a more organized manner. With the economic benefits of the research scheme, Gujarat will be at the forefront at the national level as research in science, engineering and emerging technology grows.
