Rejuvenating Water BodiesĀ

Problem

  • Water being at the core of sustainable development is critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and human survival itself.
  • The Soil water table is getting depleted and the natural aquifers are not being recharged, although the District gets around 3500 mm of rainfall in the Monsoon.
  • The District is largely covered with Forest and Tea gardens, so the loss of water in major ponds and rivers has caused great damage to the ecology.
  • Growing demand for water posed a risk of water scarcity for present as well as future generations.
  • Presence of derelict water bodies which could otherwise be a sustainable water source.

Solution

  • Rejuvenating the moribund and derelict water bodies and excavating new ponds for water conservation.
  • Created sustainable groundwater sources in order to meet up the demand for water during the period of scarcity in the field of agriculture and allied activities.
  • 235 nos. of derelict /dead water bodies were identified as feasible and have been decided to be taken up for execution at the field level on a single day.
  • Regular meetings and follow-up feedback with the stakeholders and officers and spread of awareness and benefits of long-term goals of preserving water bodies.
  • Spread of awareness and benefits of long-term goals of preserving local water bodies.

Outcomes

  • 235 nos of water bodies in the District have been rejuvenated to provide a permanent source of water.
  • Rejuvenation & Re-excavation of these water bodies increased the potential of preserving plenty of water throughout the year in derelict water bodies.
  • The local people have opened up multiple avenues for various activities such as fishery, duckery, agriculture, horticulture, and tourism.
  • As the excavation of ponds involves a huge workforce, employment opportunities have been generated for a large number of families.
  • The project has helped recharge the soil water table and rejuvenate the ecosystem based on such water resources
