Case Study

Providing Comprehensive Care to Cancer Patients

Introduction

The State Cancer Institute (SCI) was established by the Directorate of Medical Education to offer comprehensive cancer treatment and management in the state of Rajasthan. It involved the state providing a significant fund for SCI research as well as the procurement of drugs and equipment.

Problems

Prior to the project’s implementation, diagnostics facilities were exceedingly expensive. The cost of the anti-cancer medications, such as targeted treatment, TKI, etc was unaffordable. The tertiary hospital’s facilities were dispersed throughout, and it had a small number of professionals who were qualified to treat cancer.

Solutions

The project included establishment of SCI so that all facilities are available under a roof and implanted free of charge diagnostic facilities covered under government aided schemes. Employees were trained via video conference and professional courses at foreign nations health centers. Schemes of healthcare for Rajasthan government’s employees were provided.

Outcomes

The project’s outcomes included a rise in the number of cancer patients receiving treatment as well as receiving stem cell transplants. The provision of cancer care has grown to include data collecting via cancer registries.

Challenges

The initiative faced difficulties due to the demand for costly medications and prolonged patient care. Less staff was available to assist cancer patients in need and there was no specialist infrastructure for cancer care.

Innovation

One of the project’s novel features was how practically the whole state’s population was covered by a government-sponsored programme. For the delivery of services at all levels of health care, the spoke and hub model was established. At tertiary care facilities, cutting edge equipment and technology were installed.

Opportunities

The project involves expanding civil works for cancer treatment. A new, more advanced system will be built in the future to treat cancer. Additionally, it may result in the appointment of medical specialists.

Summary

Through this project, patients, regardless of economic background, had access to cutting-edge cancer therapy and care. At government hospitals, there were free diagnostic services and chemotherapeutic treatments accessible.
