Mera Pani Meri Virasat
Problem
- Over-exploitation of natural resources like groundwater to meet the increasing food grain demand
- Second-generation problems of land degradation, declining underground water table, productivity factor, poor soil health, tremendous air pollution
- Prevalence of paddy stubble burning and high production cost.
- Deteriorated soil health owing to a decline in the organic fraction and widespread deficiencies of micronutrients.
- Need for technological innovation for establishing alternate crops for sustainable agriculture.
Solution
- Launched a new scheme, “Mera Pani Meri Virasat,” to diversify the Paddy Crop (water-guzzling crop) into alternative, less water-consuming crops.
- Facilitated an Aadhar-based payment in which accounts are linked with Aadhar so there is no problem in the transfer of incentives.
- Farmers can apply online on link MFMB portal with MPMV with the complete detail of the area and crops
- Developed a committee comprising ADO/HDO, Patwari, Numberdar, and the concerned farmer for crop verification.
- After verification, the farmer receives the incentive through DBT, and payment is started through the e-payment gateway.
Outcomes
- By diversifying Paddy with less water-consuming alternate crops, 60% of water (i.e., 0.003542 MCM per acre) can be saved.
- Crop Diversification can be important in reducing water runoff and soil erosion, besides improving irrigation water availability.
- Crop Diversification is the only option for saving water.
- Helped to shift farmers from the paddy-wheat cycle, which is not only in the national interest but also provides more profitable crop options.
- Helped to restore ground water table and deteriorated soil health.
