Waste to Wealth: A Dakshin Dinajpur Story – Dakshin Dinajpur Zilla Parishad

Waste to Wealth: A Dakshin Dinajpur Story
Problem
- Plastic pollution, especially single-use bottles, creates large volumes of unmanaged waste.
- High environmental risks due to open dumping, landfill overflows, and burning of plastic waste.
- Rising public health concerns from toxic emissions, soil degradation, and mosquito-breeding waste sites.
- Municipalities are overburdened with plastic waste and lack sustainable disposal models.
- Need for cost-effective, durable materials for road construction.
Solution
- Installed plastic bottle collection and shredding machines at key locations (hospitals, offices, markets).
- An incentive-based model encouraging citizens to deposit used plastic bottles.
- Collected bottles are shredded and reused for constructing durable, eco-friendly roads.
- Introduced awareness campaigns and training sessions for community engagement.
- Public–private partnerships established for machine procurement, recycling, and road construction.
Outcomes
- Significant reduction in single-use plastic waste across Dakshin Dinajpur.
- Plastic-integrated roads are created, reducing road maintenance costs and improving durability.
- High public participation due to an incentive-based collection system.
- Established a scalable circular economy model combining waste management with infrastructure development.
- Replication interest from districts including Paschim Bardhaman, Siliguri, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Koderma, and East Kameng.
