Problem: Water is a scarce natural resource. Sustainable Water Management is important for ensuring water security for business as well as communities. Business can face water availability risks coupled with increase in water costs. Communities beyond their fence can face challenges of availability of potable drinking water and water for their livelihood.
Solutions: Sustainable water management to reduce dependence of business operations on fresh water resources and also to ensure water security for communities. It is achieved through rain water harvesting, ground water recharge and recycle of treated waste water.
Challenges: Whilst communities struggle to access water for basic household and livelihood needs, a secondary issue lurks in the background that threatens the health of the people of the communities. The quality of drinking water was a widely emerging issue especially in rural areas with a dependence on groundwater as a source of drinking water. They ensure year-round availability of water by promoting Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting Systems, ground water recharge, construction of check dams and rejuvenating of village ponds. In business, water conservation is achieved through developing innovative product solutions which consume less water in curing and concrete mix preparation and through recycling of treated waste water.
Outcomes:
Water Security for communities outside their fence for drinking water as well as livelihood purposes. Year-long water availability and more crop per drop achieved. Around 20,735 households reached through water conversation, micro irrigation and drinking water project in FY 2022-23. In business operations, reduction in specific fresh water consumption per ton of product through water efficiency and recycling measures.
Opportunity: Ambuja cement became a water positive business through sustainable water management and it is 8 times water positive. This project is scalable across other states.
Summary: Ambuja cement works with families and communities to ensure clean drinking water availability for daily household consumption and water availability for livelihood.
