Karnataka Residential Education – Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society

Karnataka Residential Education

Problem

  • Inequality in access: Students from socio-economically disadvantaged, rural, and vulnerable communities faced unequal access to high-quality education, residential support, and technology.
  • Insufficiency of school access alone: Providing access to schools was not enough; students also needed academic support, safe residential environments, nutrition, and healthcare.
  • Limited pathways to higher education: Students required stronger pathways into JEE, NEET, KCET, and professional careers to convert potential into economic mobility.
  • Geographic and socio-economic limitations: Background and location restricted access to digital learning, STEM, research, career exposure, and networks.
  • Need for a scalable public system: An opportunity existed to build a scalable public system that integrates equity, academic excellence, future-ready learning, and mobility.

Solution

  • KEA entrance and portal reservations: Use KEA-conducted Class VI entrance examination results when reserving 50% of seats for direct admission of special-category children via the portal.
  • Fully equipped residential campuses: Provide campuses with classrooms, laboratories, libraries, ICT, sports facilities, nutrition, healthcare, and accommodation.
  • Comprehensive student support and care: Deploy qualified staff and enable parent communication, monthly meetings, a Child Helpline, and 24/7 Tele-MANAS mental health support.
  • Academic excellence through planning: Drive performance through micro- and macro-level planning, monthly monitoring, assessments, remedial support, and teacher capacity-building.
  • Continuous expansion of opportunities: Expand opportunities through STEM, digital learning, innovation, scientific exposure, and strategic partnerships.

Outcomes

  • Extensive reach and inclusion: Serves 2,17,970 students across 874 residential institutions, with 60% being girls and 209 institutions exclusively for girls.
  • High academic pass rates: The SSLC pass rate reached 99.41% (89% distinction/first class), while the II PUC pass rate reached 97.22%.
  • Innovation and scientific recognition: Over 180 students were selected under INSPIRE-MANAK, and 24 were identified through NSEJS.
  • Holistic and sports achievements: Reached 842 state-level and 44 national-level sports achievements, along with 196 reaching state-level Prathibha Karanji.
  • Higher education and professional progression: 4,213 students qualified KCET, 1,377 secured engineering seats, and 814 entered medical and allied courses.
