Transforming Breast Cancer Screening in Meghalaya using AI – Health & Family Welfare Department, Meghalaya

Transforming Breast Cancer Screening in Meghalaya using AI
Problem
- 60–70% of breast cancer cases in Meghalaya are diagnosed at Stage III/IV due to absence of accessible early screening in rural and hilly regions
- Mammography facilities are confined to urban centres, creating geographical and financial barriers for remote and economically vulnerable women
- Screening uptake remains below 2% due to stigma, low awareness, and lack of privacy-assured screening mechanisms
- Delayed detection results in poor survival rates of 40–50%, increasing long-term healthcare burden and mortality
- Limited integration of structured referral pathways leads to loss to follow-up after initial detection
Solution
- Deployed AI-enabled, portable, non-invasive Thermalytix screening technology suitable for hilly terrain and outreach delivery
- Implemented screening across 47 public facilities covering 12 districts under NHM/NP-NCD framework
- Mobilised eligible women (30+) through ASHAs and ANMs with IEC campaigns and line-list preparation
- Introduced instant AI-generated triage reports categorising women into Red, Yellow, and Green risk groups
- Established digital referral and patient navigation system ensuring end-to-end closure from screening to diagnosis and treatment
Outcomes
- Screened 1,313 women during pilot phase between 01-11-2025 and 31-01-2026
- Identified 30 high-risk (Red) and 99 moderate-risk (Yellow) cases for structured referral and follow-up
- Strengthened district-level NCD coordination and healthcare worker capacity
- Demonstrated operational feasibility for statewide scale-up across 47 facilities
- Established digital monitoring and referral compliance review mechanisms
