Innovations for Holistic Student Development – School Education Department, Government of Rajasthan

Innovations for Holistic Student Development

Problem

  • There was an absence of structured fitness programs in schools, leading to a need for incorporating regular physical activities to instill lifelong healthy habits.
  • Increased stress and lack of mindfulness among students
  • Schools lacked direct involvement in sustainability programs, necessitating a structured approach to foster ecological responsibility among students.
  • There was a need to create a personal connection between individuals and conservation efforts to ensure long-term commitment.
  • Large-scale afforestation efforts previously lacked proper tracking and accountability, making it difficult to measure long-term survival and impact.

Solution

  • The Rajasthan government mandated the integration of Surya Namaskar into the daily morning assemblies across all government and private schools to promote both physical and mental well-being.
  • Large-scale events were organised to practice Surya Namaskar, culminating in a record-setting participation of 1.53 crore students on February 3, 2025.
  • The state launched an afforestation campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ encouraging students and citizens to plant trees in honor of their mothers
  • ₹37 crore was allocated for tree plantation, and geotagging mechanisms were implemented to track the progress of over 58 lakh saplings, ensuring transparency.
  • Schools, panchayats, religious leaders, and government officials were actively mobilized to ensure participation in afforestation and yoga programs.

Outcomes

  • Over 1.53 crore students from 78,974 schools participated in the mass yoga event, gaining recognition from the World Book of Records.
  • More than 1.58 crore trees were planted across Rajasthan, significantly surpassing initial targets.
  • Students exhibited increased discipline, concentration, and physical fitness due to daily yoga practices.
  • Rajasthan surpassed its initial target of planting one crore trees in a single day by successfully planting over 2.01 crore trees.
  • Geotagging of over 58 lakh trees ensured better monitoring and care, leading to higher survival rates of planted saplings.
