Case Study

E – Shiksha: Smart education for children in CCIs

Summary

E-Shiksha Abhiyan running across Odisha in all 30 districts. The program is running in 208 CHILD CARE INSTITUTIONS choosing children in need of Care and Protection and Children in conflict with law where Tab Labs are set up to provide personalized and adaptive learning to the children. The E-Shiksha programme empowers children in CCIs by providing them with equal educational opportunities, fostering digital literacy, and creating a supportive learning environment.

Problems

Many children from Child Care Institutions (CCIs), especially those studying in Odia Medium, faced difficulties in subjects like Mathematics and English. This language barrier hindered their comprehension and proficiency in these subjects, affecting their overall academic progress. Children in CCIs often had numerous queries and doubts that caregivers were unable to answer adequately. The large number of children in CCIs and limited resources made it difficult to cater to the specific needs and learning styles of each student.

Solutions

A dedicated module was developed for the program, which offered both online and offline provisions. This allowed children to continue their learning even in the absence of internet connectivity. Caregivers in the CCIs were trained to enroll profiles and guide children through a routine chart. The learning modules were designed to be engaging and age-appropriate, incorporating elements like stories, cartoons, videos, and games. Regular follow-ups and evaluations were conducted with both the children and the caregivers. CCIs were ranked based on the usage and performance of the children in the E-Shiksha programme.

Outcomes

Through the E-Shiksha programme, children have had the opportunity to interact with their peers and teachers in a digital learning environment. The E-Shiksha programme has exposed children to the use of gadgets and other delicate equipment. It promotes a safe learning environment where children can explore and analyze subject matter at their own pace and also contributes to the development of social skills among children through online interactions, discussions, and collaborative activities.

Challenges

The staff who were dealing with children had poor technical knowledge on computers and Tutors lacked interest in teaching through Tabs. The number of children was more than the no. of Tabs provided for children and there were poor internet facilities in rural remote areas.

Innovation

Children of Child Care Institutions are provided with smart education at par with children of abled families. Children got trained on the use of smart tabs which will help them in carrier building. All co-staffs are trained which equipped them with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively monitor and support the children.

Opportunities

The department plans to introduce more tabs for encouraging more children to avail E-Shiksha and to introduce other subjects such as Science and Geography for all classes.
