Indian Oil’s Sustainable Journey: A Strategic Leap Towards Net Zero Emissions

Problem

  • IndianOil’s current GHG emissions, primarily from refining operations, are approximately 21.5 MMTCO2e annually.
  • 96% of total emissions stem from operational processes, including direct fuel burning for energy are classified as Scope-1 emissions.
  • The remaining 4% results from sourcing electricity from the grid, categorized as Scope-2 emissions.
  • Current dependence on imported fossil fuels have economic and environmental implications
  • Ongoing threats to biodiversity and ecosystems, leading to degradation and loss of vital natural habitats.

Solution

  • IndianOil spearheads the CBG-focused SATAT initiative as the National Coordinator under MoP&NG, coordinating with all stakeholders.
  • Commissioned 22 CBG plants and is actively marketing CBG through 50 Retail Outlets in various states
  • Established a 200-ton per day biomass processing CBG Plant in Gorakhpur, UP, set to produce 6500 tons of CBG annually using paddy straw as feedstock.
  • Developed IBG-Max, IBG-Plus, and BioXeed for CBG, finalizing offerings for plant setup, production enhancement, and improving Fermented Organic Manure quality.
  • Collaborates with MoP&NG, urging the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers for Rs. 1500/ton Market Development Assistance.

Outcomes

  • Compressed Biogas networks can integrate with city gas distribution (CGD) networks, enhancing supplies to domestic and retail users
  • 5000 CBG Plants will provide an investment of Rs. 1.75 lakh crore, additional farmer revenue, and creation of 75,000 direct jobs.
  • Firms will be allowed to transport biogas to fuel stations for use as a renewable fuel substitute.
  • Business owners can promote and sell additional plant by-products to enhance their return on investment.
  • Abundant biomass in India positions CBG as a promising source for future clean fuels.

Case Study

“IndianOil’s Net-Zero Green Initiative”

Introduction

Waste can be converted into energy resources like biogas or bio-manure, aiding India in achieving energy independence and combating global warming.

Problems

IndianOil’s current Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions amount to around 21.5 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e) per annum. Out of the total emissions, 96% are attributed to processes such as direct fuel burning and remaining 4% results from electricity sourcing from the grid.

Solutions

IndianOil spearheads the SATAT initiative for CBG, serving as the National Coordinator under MoP&NG. It has commissioned 22 CBG plants and markets Indigreen CBG through 50 outlets in multiple states, achieving a cumulative sale of 13.2 TMT. Additionally, IndianOil is setting up a 200-ton/day CBG plant in Gorakhpur using paddy straw.

Outcomes

IndianOil’s CBG business can enhance affordable transport fuels, utilizing agricultural waste. The initiative also reduces cattle dung, press mud, and waste through organic manure .

Challenges

Ensuring a steady biomass supply for CBG Plants, lack of FOM marketing channels and obtaining low-cost funding remains a challenge despite being a priority sector.

Innovation

The company’s R&D Centre has developed CBG technologies, including IBG-Max, IBG-Plus, and BioXeed, and is finalizing technology offerings for CBG plant setup, inoculums for enhanced production, and additives for quality improvement of Fermented Organic Manure.

Opportunities

The 5000 CBG plants bring a 1.75 lakh crore investment, providing additional income for farmers and creating 75,000 direct jobs.

Summary

IndianOil is positioning itself as a future-ready global energy giant, actively exploring scalable alternative energy options to realize its visionary goals.
