Case Study

Skill Training of 200 artisans in Ramgarh District

Introduction:

Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) collaborated with Amar Jagriti Kendra to empower 200 tribal women artisans in Ramgarh District, Jharkhand. The project aimed to improve the livelihoods of these skilled craftswomen by providing specialized training in traditional crafts such as Dokra Art, sujni art, jute handicraft, bamboo art, and scented candle making.

Problems:

Economic hardships due to limited income opportunities and skilled artisans are unemployed due lack of information about various opportunities. Women in the tribal areas face socio-economic challenges due to the prevailing male-dominated mindset in society and limited resource accessibility in Ramgarh District.

Solution:

The beneficiaries were provided training in Dokra Art, sujni art, jute handicraft, bamboo art, and scented candle making which not only honed their craftsmanship but also aligned their products with market-driven demand giving them access to the required. After completing their training successfully, artisan cards were issued to these craftswomen, enabling them to access employment opportunities in the handicraft sector. The trained craftswomen were registered under SHG, SHG bank account was opened and the crafts women were registered under various Government schemes to ensure employability

Challenges:

The project was executed in Ramgarh District-an Aspirational District. Encouraging women artisans to break free from age-old beliefs in a male-dominated society and embrace their skills for employment and entrepreneurship posed a challenge. Due to a lack of information and awareness, motivating and helping craftswomen understand the benefits of the training program becomes a significant challenge.

Innovation:

The project recognized that skill alone isn’t enough; artisans need access to markets. A dedicated website was launched, showcasing their exquisite creations. Additionally, a physical stall at different places provided a tangible platform for selling their products. Empowering artisans went beyond skills. They were organized into Self-Help Groups (SHGs), fostering collaboration and mutual support.

Outcomes:

Improved work-force as per industry standards and employability/ self-employment opportunities and increased income of beneficiaries as they have access to the required consumer base.  Sustainable livelihood options as the artisans are now equipped with the market driven skills. The Project helped reduce exploitation of rural artisans by brokers/middle-men and reduce rural to urban migration of artisans.

Opportunities:

After a successful year of empowering artisans in Ramgarh District, the project aims to broaden its impact in the upcoming year (2024-25). By replicating the successful model and tailoring it to the unique context of Hazaribagh, the project aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and uplift the socio-economic status of these artisans.

Summary:

Upon successful completion of the training, the beneficiaries received artisan cards for employability. Skill Development Certificates were also provided enabling them to access loans through government schemes. Additionally, websites, stalls, and stores were established at various locations to create forward market linkages. These platforms allowed the craftswomen to sell their products directly to potential buyers, ensuring sustainability.
