AirFiber Rollout – Jio Platforms Ltd

AirFiber Rollout
Problem
- There was no single platform to manage and monitor the end-to-end process from order receipt to billing.
- The requirement for bulk network provisioning (ACS/DHCP/EMS) was critical for scaling operations.
- The existing infrastructure lacked the scalability to match the rapid expansion of AirFiber services.
- Field engineers required over 60 minutes per customer installation, leading to high turnaround time.
- The network underwent frequent modifications due to optimization and vendor firmware changes.
Solution
- A centralized IT solution was developed to manage the Order-to-Activation journey, integrating Plan & Build workflows.
- Automated provisioning and activation workflows were implemented through Jio Orchestrator, integrating with JIIMS and JCA.
- The system was designed with cloud-native microservices architecture, containerization, and open-source frameworks.
- Implemented a configurable IT automation solution that adapts dynamically to network updates and vendor changes.
Outcomes
- Streamlined real-time monitoring, enhanced process visibility, and faster issue resolution.
- Achieved faster and more efficient network provisioning, reducing manual intervention and operational costs.
- Allowed infinite scalability with minimal infrastructure costs, supporting pan-India expansion.
- 50% reduction in installation time, enabling faster service activation and improved customer experience.
- Ensured seamless integration with evolving network topologies, reducing delays and compatibility issues.

Case Study
Reliance JIO AirFiber Rollout
Reliance Jio Platform Limited embarked on the AirFiber Rollout initiative to provide high-speed wireless broadband to retail customers, eliminating the challenges of fiber deployment. The project was designed to streamline customer onboarding, enhance operational efficiency, and scale rapidly to meet growing demand. With ambitious targets for customer acquisition and network expansion, the need for a robust IT solution became evident. The company aimed to automate and optimize the Order-to-Activation process, ensuring seamless service delivery with minimal human intervention.
Challenges
The project faced multiple operational and technical challenges that required immediate solutions. Firstly, the absence of a centralized monitoring system resulted in inefficiencies in managing customer orders, provisioning, and activation. The bulk network provisioning required for large-scale deployments posed a significant challenge, as traditional methods were slow and resource-intensive. Additionally, the existing infrastructure lacked scalability, making it difficult to keep pace with Jio’s aggressive expansion goals. Another major hurdle was field deployment inefficiencies, where installations were taking over 60 minutes per customer, impacting turnaround time and service quality. Lastly, frequent network topology changes and vendor firmware updates led to ongoing integration challenges, requiring a flexible IT solution.
Solutions Implemented
To overcome these challenges, Jio developed an advanced IT platform that automated the Order-to-Activation journey and integrated various components such as Jio Orchestrator, JIIMS (Jio Integrated Inventory Management System), and JCA (Jio Convergent Activator). The system was built on cloud-native microservices architecture with containerization, allowing for infinite scalability while minimizing infrastructure costs.
For deployment efficiency, Jio introduced a mobile-based field automation tool, enabling engineers to complete installations in under 60 minutes. The platform also incorporated real-time network monitoring, ensuring faster issue resolution and proactive maintenance. Additionally, the IT system was designed to adapt dynamically to evolving network topologies and vendor changes, ensuring seamless integration and continuous improvement.
Outcomes
The AirFiber rollout achieved significant operational efficiencies and cost savings. The network rollout became faster and more cost-effective than fiber-based alternatives, reducing CAPEX costs. Automated provisioning and activation reduced manual intervention, enabling quick and seamless customer onboarding. The field installation time was cut by 50%, allowing Jio to serve more customers daily. The scalable IT infrastructure ensured that the solution could be expanded nationwide with minimal additional costs. Real-time monitoring also improved network stability, service quality, and customer experience.
Summary
The Jio AirFiber Rollout is a prime example of how automation, cloud computing, and digital transformation can revolutionize telecom operations. By leveraging open-source frameworks, scalable IT solutions, and AI-driven automation, Jio has set a new industry standard for fast, efficient, and cost-effective broadband expansion in India. The project not only streamlined internal processes but also delivered a superior customer experience, reinforcing Jio’s position as a leader in digital transformation.
